In the UK there are thousands of combi boilers installed every year. Despite regulations controlling these installations, there are still cowboys that slip through the net and aren't Gas Safe registered.

This puts the property at risk as a wrongly fitted boiler can cause a fire, or release dangerous gas emissions.

Combi boilers fitted incorrectly, or work carried out by engineers that aren't registered with the Gas Safe network, there's the risk of carbon monoxide being released. Carbon monoxide is a dangerous gas that's often released from old or poorly installed boilers.

Because it's both odourless and colourless, it's almost impossible to detect without a CO alarm. And carbon monoxide leaks kill and hospitalise dozens of people every year, so it's a serious problem.

A plumbing company from Nottingham were found guilty of failing regulations. Mr Birchmore carried out work on a boiler in 2010, capping off a gas supply and hanging a
replacement boiler.

When a concern was raised over the work, an inspector found the company were not registered with Gas Safe and the matter was passed to a Health and Safety Executive. Nottingham Magistrates then prosecuted Birchmore and he was fined £3,053.

Combi boilers are the most popular type of heating system in Britain, but it's imperative to ensure they're installed correctly.

The Health and Safety Executive, Steve Woods, gives some advice, saying: "At the time of carrying out the work, Mr Birchmore was not registered with Gas Safe. In order to work legally in the UK, gas installers must be registered with the appropriate approved body. It is essential that homeowners and landlords check this before having work carried out to ensure the job is completed to a high standard and most of all, is safe.

"Badly fitted and poorly serviced gas appliances can cause fires, explosions, gas leaks and carbon monoxide poisoning. Our message to everyone is clear - check the engineer's Gas Safe Register ID card before letting them begin work and check the details online or by calling 0800 408 5500."

When getting quotes for replacement boilers always use a reputable service such at combiboiler.net.

Combi boilers help homeowners replace their inefficient heating systems and reduce their bills.

With an efficient system, such as the combi, you'll:

· Cut your energy bills by up to £300 annually

· Ensure your home is warmer as your system is much more efficient

· Reduce carbon emissions released into the atmosphere, improving your home's Energy Performance Certificate rating.
